International editorial premiere
Politehnica University Timișoara (UPT) reaffirms its role as a leader in global research dedicated to sustainability by publishing the academic volume "Natural Disasters Under Changing Climate: Modeling Strategies, Predictions, and Management". Recently published under the aegis of the prestigious international publishing house Academic Press / Elsevier, the work represents an essential scientific tool for managing climate risks worldwide.
Among the elite coordinators and authors of this editorial publication is the head of the department, dr. eng. Rareș Hălbac-Cotoară-Zamfir, a teacher and researcher at Politehnica University Timișoara. The international team of authors also includes Zahra Kalantari (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden), a renowned specialist who is currently working in the UPT team for the implementation of the large-scale European project Horizon Europe Land4climate, a strategic initiative, with a budget of almost 13 million euros, coordinated at the university level by Rareș Hălbac-Cotoară-Zamfir.
The book offers a comprehensive and integrated analysis of extreme phenomena such as floods, landslides, drought, wildfires and heat waves. The most novel element brought by the authors consists in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning algorithms and remote sensing to develop advanced predictive models and modern management strategies, designed to support administrative decisions and vulnerable communities in the process of adapting to climate change.
Strengthening international cooperation: UPT Delegation in Stockholm
During August 17-21, 2026, in line with the project's excellence objectives, a UPT delegation led by Head of Department, Dr. Eng. Rareș Hălbac-Cotoară-Zamfir paid an official research visit to the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the best-rated technical universities in Europe.
The official invitation aimed to directly strengthen collaboration in the field of water resources research and explore new opportunities for joint international projects. During the visit, the Timișoara delegation had strategic meetings with Swedish researchers and became familiar with the cutting-edge activities of the KTH WaterCentre.
The discussions and future directions of joint innovation between UPT and KTH target essential interconnected areas, also found in the pages of the newly launched volume:
- Climate adaptation and water resources resilience;
- Nature-based solutions;
- Digital decision support systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for water management;
- Innovative synergy between water, energy, food, environment and urban systems.
Strategic funding and performance in international rankings
The publication of this reference volume represents a direct result obtained following the implementation of the research project 39PHE/2024 funded by UEFISCDI with the amount of 202075 lei, carried out within the Politehnica University of Timișoara. Also, the official visit to KTH Royal Institute of Technology strategically fits into the objectives and activities proposed by the funding contract of the 39PHE project, which stipulates the establishment of academic links and the carrying out of working visits to higher education institutions listed in the Top 100 worldwide within the prestigious international QS ranking.
Through this double success - the publication of a scientific work of global impact and the expansion of the network of partnerships with top European institutions -, Politehnica University Timișoara demonstrates once again that the expertise of its researchers makes concrete contributions to solving the great climate challenges of the 21st century
